In the wake of Sierra Leone’s devastating civil war, rebuilding was not just a priority—it was a lifeline. One year after the conflict officially ended, the scars of war were still raw. Villages lay disconnected, infrastructure was in tatters, and communities were grappling with the dual burdens of physical rebuilding and psychological recovery.
Amid this landscape of need and resilience, Forte Travel Management was tasked with a mission as ambitious as it was necessary: to support NGOs and advisory groups in creating a resource hub deep in the bush—100 miles from the nearest infrastructure or consistent power supply. This hub would provide critical services to over 2,500 surrounding villagers.
Here’s how we did it, navigating a labyrinth of logistical, cultural, and human challenges to deliver sanitation, healthcare, and training programs that laid the foundation for long-term recovery.
The Landscape: Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone was emerging from an 11-year civil war that had ravaged communities, displaced millions, and left deep psychological wounds. The government was strained, and international NGOs were crucial for delivering essential services. Yet, the terrain was as challenging as the situation:
- Villages were remote, accessible only by dirt roads prone to washing out.
- Power was non-existent, and clean water was scarce.
- Trauma from the war lingered, with many individuals suffering from PTSD, creating an atmosphere of mistrust and caution.
Our job was to enable NGOs to penetrate these areas effectively, working collaboratively with village leaders and government officials to establish trust and deliver results.
Building the Bush Hub: Resources Already in the Field
Rather than shipping in resources—a costly and often time-intensive approach—we coordinated existing assets already present in Sierra Leone. This meant:
- Mobilising Local Expertise: Hiring and training locals as staff ensured cultural nuances were respected and created a direct economic benefit for the community.
- Using Existing NGO Supplies: Partnering with multiple NGOs allowed us to pool medical equipment, educational materials, and sanitation kits that were already in-country.
- Improvised Power Solutions: Solar panels and generators were sourced and transported to the hub, creating a sustainable energy solution for workshops, clinics, and communication equipment.
The result was a fully operational hub that served as a beacon of hope, drawing villagers for miles around to access life-changing programs.
Navigating Challenges with Sensitivity
The situation in Sierra Leone required not just logistical expertise but a deep understanding of human psychology and political fragility.
Overcoming PTSD and Trauma
The war left deep psychological scars, with many villagers and even local officials distrustful of outsiders. We worked closely with mental health advisors and trauma specialists to structure interactions and programs that minimised triggers. Strategies included:
- Listening First: Engaging in dialogue with local leaders to understand their needs and concerns before introducing any interventions.
- Inclusive Decision-Making: Ensuring every project, from sanitation to healthcare, was co-designed with input from local communities.
Political Fragility
The government was in rebuilding mode, balancing international support with internal cohesion. We approached with transparency and worked through official channels, building trust over time.
- Regular updates to government officials reinforced our commitment to their sovereignty.
- Programs were aligned with national recovery goals, avoiding duplication of efforts or perceived competition with government services.
Delivering Impact: One Year, Thousands Transformed
The hub became a lifeline for the 2,500 villagers in the surrounding region. Over the course of 12 months, it achieved remarkable milestones:
Sanitation
- Installed communal latrines and clean water points in over 10 villages.
- Conducted workshops on hygiene practices, reducing waterborne diseases by 40%.
Healthcare
- Held bi-weekly medical clinics at the hub, treating hundreds for malaria, infections, and war injuries.
- Partnered with local health workers to distribute mosquito nets and immunisations.
Education and Training
- Launched workshops on basic literacy, agricultural practices, and vocational skills.
- Trained local women’s groups to act as peer educators, empowering community-driven change.
Lessons in Collaboration
The success of the program was a testament to the power of collaboration. Local leaders, NGOs, and government officials each played a vital role:
- Village Leaders ensured community buy-in and participation, helping to overcome initial resistance to outside assistance.
- Government Support provided a framework for scaling our efforts, aligning with national goals for health and education.
- NGO Expertise brought specialised knowledge and resources, from healthcare to sanitation engineering.
Forte Travel Management’s role was to harmonise these moving parts, ensuring nothing was overlooked and that the mission stayed on track despite constant obstacles.
The Human Impact: Beyond Numbers
While metrics are important, the true success of this initiative lay in its human stories:
- A mother who no longer had to walk 10 miles for the nurse to examine her poorly child.
- A child vaccinated against diseases that once claimed so many lives in the village.
- A father who, through vocational training, rebuilt his family’s livelihood after years of war-induced poverty.
These were the moments that defined the project—restoring dignity and hope through self reliance.
Looking Ahead: Sustainable Recovery
As the program wound down, its focus shifted to sustainability:
- Training Local Leaders: Ensuring knowledge transfer so that programs could continue without outside intervention.
- Long-Term Partnerships: Facilitating connections between villages, in country groups and NGOs for ongoing support.
- Infrastructure Expansion: Encouraging government and private investment to build roads, schools, and permanent clinics.
